HazMat Operations Refresher

Approximately 25 students from Kirwan Heights and Scott Township Fire District departments participated in an annual HazMat Operations refresher, hosted by Heidelberg VFD. This 8-hour class is conducted each year to bring everyone up to date on responding to Hazardous Materials incidents. Students participated in a 4-hour lecture last week, followed by a hands-on session tonight, during which they practiced various defensive (containment) operations.

Trench Rescue Awareness

Norm Auvil (Pittsburgh EMS, PA ST-1) returned to Kirwan Heights today to present Trench Rescue Awareness. 25 students from Kirwan Heights and surrounding departments attended.

Confined Space Rescue Continued

Due to multiple students and instructors being deployed on strike team assignments, the practical day of Confined Space Rescue was postponed to Sunday, September 25th. Students participated in multiple rescue scenarios.

Commercial Structure Fire

Around 0600 Sunday morning, Company 124 responded on a second-alarm assignment into Scott Township for a commercial structure fire. Crews established a secondary water supply and supplied the FDC in the South tower of Providence Point. After intense investigation, it was found to be a smoke condition from a malfunctioning elevator.

MVC on Washington Pike

Rescue 124 and Kirwan Heights EMS responded to the report of a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Washington Pike and Vanadium Road. The vehicle was found on it's side. Rescue 124 worked to stabilize the vehicle while EMS crews provided medical treatment and transport to the injured patients. Rescue 124 remained onscene to provide traffic control and debris clean-up after the patients were transported to area hospitals.

Structural Collapse Operations I Class

On Monday night, over 30 students came to Kirwan Heights for Structural Collapse Operations. The students came from all over Allegheny County, including Central (Elizabeth), Heidelberg, Ingram, Oakdale, Kennedy and the City of Pittsburgh EMS. Norm Auvil taught the class, which is the pre-requisite for the hands-on class, which we are hoping to hold in the spring.

MVC on Washington Pike

Around 13:00, crews responded to a report of an MVC with injuries in front of the station. Crews transported one patient to a local hospital and provided traffic control and clean up.

Natural Gas Leak

Friday afternoon, a construction crew struck a natural gas line, causing a smell of gas in the area. The duty crew and personnel in the station were able to get the Rescue and Engine out the door immediately. Crews arrived to find an active natural gas leak, and Columbia Gas arrived shortly after and plugged the leak.
